SLICES OF PORTUGUESE HISTORY
Quando: 13/05/2026 às 18:00
Onde: Indie, not a Bookshop - Cidadela de Cascais
If you’ve ever wandered through a Portuguese palace, stood in front of a royal portrait, or simply wondered about the country you now call home — this evening is for you. Not a lecture. A conversation. The kind of storytelling that makes Portuguese history feel like something that happened to people you know.
Isabel Stilwell is one of Portugal’s most-read authors, with over 350,000 books sold and thirteen historical novels bringing Portuguese queens and kings vividly back to life. She grew up bilingual - the daughter of English parents who made Portugal their home - and her father, who studied History and was a passionate storyteller, instilled in her a love of the past that never left.
She trained as a journalist, spent years directing some of Portugal’s most influential publications, but history was always her real calling. In 2007 she published her first historical novel and never looked back.
On May 13th, Isabel will take us into the world of Queen Maria II — the young girl who inherited a kingdom in turmoil, ruled Portugal through revolution and crisis, raised eleven children, and also happened to be the childhood friend and lifelong pen pal of Queen Victoria. The two queens were born just weeks apart, met as children in London, and wrote to each other throughout their lives about everything from politics to motherhood.
